Which packaging materials are most useful, and what happens after disposal?

Packaging protects products using properties such as strength and resistance to water. Reuse can reduce discarded items, but washing uses resources. Recycling depends on the material and local collection rules. A product labelled recyclable is not necessarily accepted locally.
